Our Founding

The Carbon Containment Lab spun out of Yale University as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in early 2024, excited to move at the pace and scale of our partners. The Lab was founded by Dean Takahashi, the former Senior Director at the Yale Investments Office, and originally launched in January 2020 as part of the Yale School of the Environment (YSE). Recognizing the need for carbon removal if we are to limit the Earth’s warming, the CC Lab seeks to research, develop, and teach safe, just methods of removing and containing atmospheric carbon at scale and at low cost. To achieve implementation and adoption, the Lab combines scientific expertise with economic and business insight to help support carbon containment -- which includes both carbon dioxide removal as well as emissions abatement.

Since our founding, we have supported the implementation of a wide range of experiments and pilots, yielding successes and lessons learned on how to most effectively contain carbon and mitigate climate change.
