An Update from the Carbon Containment Lab

March 11, 2024

We've spun out! We're now an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit.

We at the Carbon Containment Lab have some exciting news to share. As of February, we have spun out from Yale and begun operating as an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit. We believe that this change of structure will equip us to tackle the climate crisis with more speed and agility. Read this Q&A with our Executive Director Dean Takahashi, published by the Yale School of the Environment, about our spin-out.

While our name and structure have slightly changed, much about the CC Lab has not. Our mission is the same: we are committed to conducting research and educating the general public on low-cost and scalable carbon removal and greenhouse gas mitigation projects. We’re excited to continue working with our partners and trusted collaborators and to expand our projects and research. And we’ll still be in New Haven with the same great team!

Since our founding in 2020, the Yale School of the Environment has been a fantastic home, and a place where we’ve learned and grown tremendously. Going forward, we will continue to collaborate closely with Yale — teaching courses on carbon containment in Yale College and the professional schools, mentoring and employing students, and partnering on research.

We are proud to look back on the past four years and see how our active projects and project pipeline have grown. In recognition of the potential of our projects and the continued imperative for mitigation and carbon removal, we’ve raised our quantitative goals even higher. We’re excited to move our projects forward even faster in our new structure.

Lastly, we are grateful for the ardent support of our advisors, collaborators, and donors. We are especially fortunate that former Yale President Richard Levin; former Commissioner of the Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development Catherine Smith; Sutter Hill Ventures Partner and former Yale Trustee G. Leonard Baker; and Elm Street Ventures Founder Robert Bettigole have agreed to serve on our inaugural Board of Directors.

We’re thrilled to start on this new chapter and hope that you’ll join us. Please reach out to us at info@cclab.org with questions or ideas for collaboration.
