Skakel McCooey is a rising senior in Yale College. He is pursuing a simultaneous award of both a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degrees in history, focusing on the intellectual and environmental histories of the Caribbean and Europe. Before joining CC Lab, Skakel worked at Students for Carbon Dividends — a student-led effort advocating for policies to reduce carbon emissions. He has conducted research at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City and the Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory in Maine, focusing on ichthyology, herpetology, and malacology. Skakel has also worked as a reporter and editor at the Yale Daily News, and has broken stories on a variety of Yale-related issues including the “Varsity Blues” admissions scandal. His writing has appeared in the New York Times, CapX, and the YDN, while his reports have been cited by outlets including CNN, CBS, and Deadspin. In his free time he enjoys hiking, mountain biking, and playing tennis. Skakel also plays the bassoon, and despite rarely practicing, played in Carnegie Hall with his gradeschool orchestra.
